In September, 2004, the Centralina Economic Development Commission assisted the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications at UNC Charlotte to obtain a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration for the development of a 14 partner laboratory within the new Center. The effort helped strengthen a core competency center at the Charlotte Research Institute.
